Abstract

The role of the school as an educational institution is very important and in the midst of the existing competition and the demands of the needs of the students now days, the school should give the best in its performance. The XYZ School realizes these needs and set KPI (Key Performance Indicator) specifically designed to improve the quality of schools. The principal is expected to have a personality that can lead through his leadership style and be able to direct his subordinates to achieve goals by using KPI. Thus, this research studies the role of leadership in realizing KPI at XYZ School, North Jakarta. In detail, the research aims are: 1) to study the principal’s leadership in kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school in realizing KPI, 2) to study how the vice principals’ perception towards the leadership of the principal in realizing KPI. This research was conducted from March to September 2018 and the research subjects are (i) principal (ii) three vice-principals (representing each level of education). All data from this study were collected from interviews. The data was then analyzed qualitatively using the triangulation method. The research findings in this study are: 1) principal applied situational and transformational leadership styles, meetings with school principals and encouraged the performance of deputy principals with a sense of friendliness, close, and consideration in realizing KPIs, 2) the vise pricipals have a good perception of principal’s leadership in realizing KPI. The results of this study will be used as a source of information for principals, KPI stakeholders, and school management to encourage better school performance. / Peran sekolah sebagai institusi pendidikan sangatlah penting dan di tengah-tengah persaingan yang ada dan tuntutan kebutuhan dari para murid saat ini, sudah selayaknya sekolah memberikan yang terbaik di dalam kinerjanya. Sekolah XYZ menyadari kebutuhan tersebut dan menetapkan KPI (Key Performance Indicator) yang dirancang khusus untuk meningkatkan mutu sekolah. Kepala sekolah diharapkan memiliki kepribadian yang dapat memimpin melalui gaya kepemimpinannya serta mampu mengarahkan para bawahannya agar dapat mencapai tujuan. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini meneliti peran kepemimpinan dalam mewujudkan KPI di sekolah XYZ, Jakarta Utara. Secara rinci, tujuan penelitian ini adalah: 1) untuk mengkaji bagaimana kepemimpinan kepala sekolah di TK, SD, SMP, dan SMA dalam mewujudkan KPI, 2) untuk mengkaji bagaimana persepsi para wakil kepala sekolah terhadap kepemimpinan kepala sekolah dalam mewujudkan KPI. Penelitian dilakukan dari bulan Maret sampai September 2018 dan subjek penelitiannya adalah: (i) kepala sekolah (ii) tiga wakil kepala sekolah (yang mewakili setiap jenjang pendidikan). Semua data dari penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari wawancara. Data kemudian dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode triangulasi. Hasil penelitian yang didapatkan adalah: 1) kepala sekolah menggunakan gaya kepemimpinan situasional dan transformasional, mengadakan pertemuan dengan kepala sekolah dan mendorong kinerja para wakil kepala sekolah dengan memunjukan rasa bersahabat, dekat dan penuh pertimbangan secara efektif untuk mewujudkan KPI yang diharapkan, 2) Para wakil kepala sekolah memiliki persepsi yang baik terhadap kepemimpinan kepsek dalam mewujudkan KPI. Hasil penelitian ini akan digunakan sebagai sumber informasi bagi kepala sekolah, pemangku kepentingan KPI, dan pihak manajemen sekolah untuk mendorong kinerja sekolah yang lebih baik.
