Abstract

Parents are the closest people in child’s environment to grow and develop. One of the children with special needs is called child speech delay that the children need a special handling from parents for their growth and development process, and the problem is the role of parents in developing communication skill and independence of the children of four-year-old speech delay. The purpose of this study is to find out about child speech delay, the differences between age and children’s communication skills and independence, and role of parents in developing children’s communication skills and independence. This research uses a qualitative approach on a case study. There are 5 subjects on this research which is the parents, speech delay children, shadow teachers, speech therapists, and occupational therapists. Data collected by observation, interview, and documentation. Data validity is getting by data triangulation. Based on medical results, children with speech delay caused by west syndrome that affected the child's language and motor development. In this study, the role of parents is illustrated in the development of communication skills and children’s independence, and the most important thing is to give examples for the children. The dominant development for children's communication skills is recognizing verbs, and the most prominent development of children's independence is thickening the letters, numbers, images/shapes, matching pictures, and also cutting paper and tearing paper. The obstacle faced by parents in this learning process is that it depends on the child's mood. / Orangtua adalah orang terdekat dilingkungan anak tumbuh dan berkembang. Salah satu anak berkebutuhan khusus adalah anak speech delay dimana perlu penanganan khusus orangtua dalam proses tumbuh kembang anak. Permasalahan yang dihadapi yaitu bagaimana peran orangtua dalam mengembangkan keterampilan komunikasi dan kemandirian anak speech delay usia empat tahun. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui lebih dalam anak speech delay, adanya perbedaan antara usia dengan kemampuan keterampilan komunikasi dan kemandirian anak, peran orangtua dalam mengembangkan keterampilan komunikasi dan kemandirian anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif berjenis studi kasus. Subyek penelitian ada lima yaitu orangtua, anak speech delay, guru pendamping (shadow teacher), terapis wicara dan terapis okupasi. Data diperoleh melalui Observasi, Wawancara dan Dokumentasi. Keabsahan data dilakukan dengan triangulasi data. Berdasarkan hasil medis anak mengalami speech delay karena west syndrome mempengaruhi perkembangan bahasa serta motorik anak. Dalam penelitian ini tergambar peran orangtua dalam perkembangan keterampilan komunikasi dan kemandirian anak yang paling utama adalah memberikan keteladanan. Perkembangan keterampilam komunikasi anak yang dominan adalah Mengenal Kata Kerja sementara perkembangan kemandirian anak yang paling menonjol adalah Menebalkan Huruf, Menebalkan Angka, Menebalkan gambar/bentuk, Mencocokan Gambar, Menggunting Kertas dan Merobek Kertas. Kendala yang dihadapi orangtua adalah pembelajaran tergantung dari suasana hati anak.
