Abstract

The Goethe-Institut is one of many foreign cultural centers in Jakarta. As Federal Republic of Germany's cultural institute, Goethe-Institut promotes German life and culture through broad variety of programs and events such as formal German language course, examination program, workshops, and exhibition. In Goethe-Institut Jakarta, located in Menteng, these programs and events are accommodated in adjacent spaces which create intense flow of users and build a potential melting point area around the transitional spaces. The space potential to be a melting point, supported by Menteng as a cultural heritage landscape area in Jakarta, inspired the design study to optimize the space for users' interaction and activities as well as contribute to the overall surroundings of Goethe-Institut. Through data collection that was conducted by observations, literature studies, interviews, and questionnaires, it was concluded that Biophilic will be a suitable approach to address both design issues and potential. Biophilic is an approach based on Biphilia theory where the design focuses on the relationship between humans and nature, and utilizes nature to improve both human physical and psychological condition. The design process referred to 14 Biophilic design patterns that was picked for their compatibility with each transitional space design aspect as melting point in Goethe-Institut. It will be clearly depicted that the space is designed to create a dynamic atmosphere which make use of the green space to encourage interaction of users while maintaining Goethe-Institut identity.
