Abstract

The thesis aims to conduct a detailed research of the Indian foreign policy toward ASEAN centrality based on its national identity and interest. Adopting Constructivism through a historical comparative method, it found that the current national interests of India are a product of the long-standing historical relations of its socio-cultural, religious, political, economic, and traditional-trades engagements in the Indo-Pacific region. India’s role is naturally seen as a major center of economic and cultural influence in the region. Furthermore, it also argues that the reinvention of the Indian national interests is primarily connected with the realization of this newly acquired identity. A conceptual analysis of the ‘Look East’ vision and then ‘Act East’ policy demonstrate that this strategy accumulates the new national interests of India that imply maintaining its role as a major power that connects African and Gulf States with East and Southeast Asia. The role of ‘ASEAN Centrality’ in this strategy and elucidates that the promotion of a stable, inclusive, and an independent Indo-Pacific region is favorable to the interests of both India and ASEAN states, allowing them to increase their trade revenues while also preventing the region’s polarization and guaranteeing the environment of security and regional resilience.
