Abstract

Evaluations on voter turnouts in Indonesia have shown that turnout has been steadily decreasing every year, sparking concerns for the upcoming general election in 2014. In this situation where voter participation is decreasing, youths of Indonesia are expected to play an important role in the upcoming elections. With around 59 million votes and amounting to 34.3% of the populace, youths have the power to overturn this downward trend, yet apathetic seemed to be the keyword when explaining youths’ participation on elections and towards politics. Powered by Berita Satu Media Holdings, a youth initiative named Ayo Vote is trying its best to address these youths’ apathy. Offering a one-stop political education portal, Ayo Vote intend to help bring about a solution to the low turnout in elections by encouraging young voters, not only into learning about politics but also actively voting at the upcoming elections. In order to be involved in Ayo Vote’s efforts and also examine its use of the new media, the author worked as an intern for five months, starting from 20 May and ending at 19 October 2013. The author’s main method of collecting data was through participation observation. During the enactments of this internship, the author noticed that Ayo Vote employs communication theories such as, Aristotle’s Rhetoric, Burke’s Dramatism, and Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm, in its publications in order to appeal to the youths / Evaluasi pada tingkat partisipasi pemilih dalam pemilihan umum (pemilu) di Indonesia telah menunjukkan bahwa partisipasi pemilih terus menurun setiap tahunnya, memicu kekhawatiran akan pemilu 2014 mendatang.
