Maraknya remaja berlatar-belakang keluarga kurang harmonis menggunakan kata-kata dan perbuatan kasar yang cenderung merendahkan dan menyakiti orang lain atau dikenal dengan konsep violent communication menarik perhatian peneliti. Sesuai dengan teori interaksi simbolik, salah satu hal yang mempengaruhi perilaku termasuk cara berkomunikasi adalah konsep diri. Karenanya penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui bagaimana implikasi konsep diri terhadap violent communication serta bagaimana pelaku memaknai violent communication. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenemenologi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam, data di analisis dengan tehknik analisis data Van Kaam dimodifikasi Moustakas. Sebanyak enam informan berlatar-belakang keluarga kurang harmonis berpartisipasi. Dari analisis data teridentifikasi lima klaster tema yaitu konsep diri informan, ekspresi verbal, ekspresi non-verbal, sumber penggunaan violent communication, serta pemaknaan informan tentang violent communication. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa seluruh informan menunjukan kriteria konsep diri negatif dan mengekspresikan violent communication secara verbal dan non-verbal dengan sebagian besar informan memaknai violent communication sebagai hal yang wajar serta dapat menyelesaikan masalah./ Nowadays, children from dysfunctional family tend to communicate using harsh words and actions that tend to demean and hurt another, known as violent communication. It has attracted the attention of researchers. Based on symbolic interaction theory, one of the things that affect behavior, including how to communicate is strongly related to self-concept. Therefore this study was conducted to find out how the implications of the concept itself against violent communication as well as how informants interpret the concept of violent communication. This study used a qualitative method with phenomenological approach. The data collection is done by in-depth interview and analyzed by Van Kaam’s technique modified by Moustakas. A total of six informants from dysfunctional families are participated. From the data analyzed identified five clusters theme, informant’s self concept, verbal and non-verbal expression of violent communication, sources of violent communication, and informant’s interpretation of violent communication. Therefore this study found that all informants showed negative self-concept criteria and expressing verbal and non-verbal violent communication with the majority of the informants interpreting violent communication as something natural and a way of solving problem.
