Abstract

This research is based on the increasing needs of transportation technology. One implementation of the automation system is automatic toll collection system using active Radio Frequency Identification/RFID sensor. It is interesting to explore active RFID technology with the ability to identify objects remotely. The research question here is whether the active RFID reader is able to identify the object that passes through the sensing area and reads the data stored in the tag when the vehicle speed is above the speed limit of the highway, which is 100 km/h. In this final thesis, a minimum device is built from automatic toll collection system. This device is connected to the modem to get online. In order to recognize the data in the tag, the user account must be registered first. User data is stored in an online database, then the registered active RFID tag is installed permanently on the vehicle. When the vehicle passes through the sensing area of active RFID reader, the user information that includes location, time and balance will be updated in the online database. Information obtained by RFID sensor can be seen through Automatic Teller Machine/ATM program connected in an online database. From several tests performed, it can be concluded that the system and ATM program run well. Vehicle speed and effective read range of the reader without any obstruction between reader and object tests show that active RFID reader can read data correctly when the object moves in 110 km/h within the sensing area of 300 metres away from reader location.
