Communication technology has evolved in such way that it ease problem of distance and time in doing communication within society. For instance, the invention of smartphone. These days, creative developers created new phenomenon of online dating where smartphone users can install the software to start using the online dating application to communicate with strangers online through their smartphone. However, the use of such application will more or less influence the users especially in the interaction process of online dating. This interaction process is the main issue that the writer wants to highlight in this thesis. For research purpose, the writer will focus on Growlr, an online dating application which specially designed for homosexual community with distinct bearlike physical appearance. Regarding Growlr application, the writer is interested in exploring on how the users present themselves on the application and how user profiles influence other users to interact among them. This research is conducted using the symbolic interaction theory with qualitative research method which use semiotic Eco approach. The concepts used in the research are self-presentation and the gay classification. The number of subject of study in total are 6 which are chosen based on their description of criteria written in English within the application, and all reside in Jakarta. Result of this research shown that based on self-presentation and expression most of Growlr users can be classified as Extro-seducer and Intro-seducer. Meanwhile, based on user preference most of Growlr users can be classified as ‘welcome’ and ‘picky’. / Perkembangan teknologi komunikasi telah mengatasi kendala yang dihadapi manusia terkait jarak dan waktu dalam berkomunikasi. Salah satu contohnya dengan kehadiran smartphone. Berkembangnya software komunikasi pada smartphone menimbulkan fenomena baru yaitu aplikasi kencan online yang digunakan untuk bersosialisasi dengan pengguna lainnya. Namun, dalam penggunaanya, banyak bentuk interaksi yang dapat memengaruhi seseorang dalam berinteraksi. Hal ini lah yang menjadi alasan mengapa penulis ingin mengangkat topik ini sebagai tesis. Untuk aplikasi yang dipilih untuk diteliti merupakan aplikasi Growlr, dimana aplikasi ini merupakan aplikasi kencan online yang diperuntukkan untuk para komunitas gay yang memiliki kriteria tubuh bear (beruang). Terkait aplikasi ini, penulis tertarik untuk meneliti mengenai bagaimana presentasi diri pengguna ini dilakukan? Bagaimana hal tersebut dapat memengaruhi pengguna lain untuk berinteraksi. Penelitian ini sendiri beracuan pada teori interaksi simbolik dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan semiotik Eco dengan konsep yang digunakan adalah presentasi diri serta klasifikasi gay. Jumlah subjek penelitian disini ada 6 orang yang dipilih berdasarkan kriteria deskripsi diri dalam bahasa Inggris dan lokasi kota besar seperti Jakarta. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa presentasi diri pengguna aplikasi Growlr ini diklasifikasikan berdasarkan ekspresi diri yaitu Extro-seducer dan Intro-seducer, sedangkan berdasarkan preferensi pengguna muncul presentasi diri pengguna yang welcome dan pengguna yang picky.
