Abstract

The COVID-19 virus pandemic has had a major impact on the continuity of the industry. Previously, creative industries, such as handmade crafts, were thriving and were one of the largest contributors to the creative economy in Indonesia. This shows that creative workers can participate in developing it. Kurinuki is a technique for making ceramics with only one rule, namely hollowing out the clay blocks. The uniqueness lies in the attractive texture produced by chipping, sculpting, cutting, tearing, and so on. This technique is not yet commonly used, even though this technique is simple and does not require special tools or skills so that anyone can work, especially during difficult times such as a pandemic. This research was conducted to explore the Kurinuki technique and to what extent it is maximized to demonstrate its potential for product applications. The research began with data search through research on basic knowledge of general ceramics, Kurinuki technique procedures, interviews with experts, and analyzing the products produced by Kurinuki ceramics. After that, the research was continued with experiments and further exploration, as well as conducting surveys, FGDs, and QFD. This research journey led the author to produce several experimental products that went through the consumer review process and also a collection that was the embodiment of Kurinuki's more innovative explorations. Although Kurinuki is a slow-processing therapeutic technique, it has the potential to produce works with a sculptural texture. The characteristics of this technique are well demonstrated in the final collection.
