Abstract
World population that develops obesity has increased significantly, this made obesity a problem that gained many global attention. Obesity leads to many disturbances in body function, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) which decreases sleep quality. Decreased sleep quality may affect neuroendocrine function the ghrelin and leptin hormone, which play a role in increasing body weight. There is a bidirectional relation between the obesity population that develop OSA and sleep quality, but the relation between the obesity population that didn’t develop OSA and sleep quality are still poorly understood.
This study was conducted to learn the relation between body mass index and sleep quality among subjects without OSA symptoms.
This study used a cross sectional method with 206 senior high school students in Kupang that agree to contribute and already fulfill the research criteria. Data were collected from December 2020 – January 2021, then the results were analyzed with chi-square and logistic regression in SPSS 25,0.
This study found that there is a correlation between BMI and sleep quality among subjects without OSA symptoms that are categorized as obesity compared to subjects that categorized as normal and also among subjects that categorized as normal & overweight with P-value <0.05.
