Abstract
Background: Medication administration errors is one of the most common areas of nursing risk in inpatient settings which implies to primary goal of nursing in maximizing patient health (National Patient Safety Agency [NPSA], 2007; Wilson, 2009; Cho, Johnston, and Manias, 2013; International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 2015). Medication administration errors can be threaten to patient safety and deal directly with nurse as the final hurdle before any consequences occur to patients (Berdot et al., 2013; Fisher & Scott, 2013). Aim: This literature review was made to demonstrate the importance of standarized drug administration strategies to prevent the occurence of medication errors in inpatient settings and to place medication administration safety as a competency that nurses must demonstrate in hospital. Methods: This research used thematic analysis method: a simplified approach by selecting scientific studies from five electronic databases: EBSCO, JSTOR, ProQuest, Springer and PubMed in the span of ten years (2007-2017), using Joanna Briggs Institute’s Critical Appraisal, and already tested for ethical feasibility through Research, Community Service, and Training Committee (RCTC) Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Universitas Pelita Harapan. Result: The resulting strategy focuses on three potential areas, there are: improving nurse skills, innovating drug administration technology and nurse knowledge about medication errors and collaborating with other multidisciplines / Latar Belakang: Medication administration errors merupakan salah satu area risiko keperawatan yang paling sering terjadi di setting rawat inap yang berimplikasi dengan tujuan utama keperawatan dalam memaksimalkan kesehatan pasien (National Patient Safety Agency [NPSA], 2007; Wilson, 2009; Choo, Johnston, dan Manias, 2013; International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 2015).
