Abstract

Individuals who have nighttime driving visual-related difficulties will increase the risk of a traffic accident. Nowadays, high mobility certainly increases a person's experience of traffic accidents, especially for young adults, less than 24 years old. Based on a report from the Indonesian Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) in mid-2020, it was found that the highest incidence of traffic accidents was experienced by young drivers. Objective: To determine how visual-related driving difficulties at night affect the risk of traffic accidents. Methods: This observational study with a cross-sectional study design was chosen as the research method. A total of 106 samples of adolescents who live in Jakarta with a maximum age of 24 years who already have a driving license (SIM) participated in the research. All samples were taken by a simple random sampling method. The exclusion criteria were adolescents who had congenital disease, who drove a vehicle with a vehicle age ≥ 6 years, subjects who did not complete the data requested, and were not willing to participate in this study. Chi square test is used to determine the relationship between visual impairment when driving at night and the risk of traffic accidents. The researcher conducted a logistic regression analysis test to see how confounding factors had an effect on the increased risk of traffic accidents. Results: Overall, the majority of adolescents who have SIM A DKI Jakarta have a high risk of traffic accidents (n = 55; 51.9%). Difficulty seeing vehicles (p = 0.032), pedestrians (p = 0.002), road signs (p = 0.002), roads (p = 0.017), glare (p = 0.003), adjusting to headlights (p = 0.002) , judging turn-off (p = 0.028), judging moving cars (p = 0.003), and poor weather (p = 0.049) were associated with an increased risk of traffic accidents. Conclusions: All variables have a significant relationship with the risk of traffic accidents, but further research is needed.
