Abstract

The presence of water is one of the main problems in pavement failures because water triggers the loss of adhesion between bitumen (asphalt) and aggregate, that is also known as stripping. High rainfall intensity and humidity in Indonesia are the two incidences that could lead to stripping. The hydrophobic characteristic of Asphalt and hydrophilic characteristic of aggregate cause the asphalt and aggregate to unbound in the presence of water. This study uses Zeolite for the Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) to achieve lower mixing temperature. Since zeolite contains water, this can add to the stripping problem. One possible solution to this problem is by adding Anti-Stripping Agent (ASA) to the mixture to increase the adhesion between asphalt and aggregate. This study tests WMA with various asphalt content, namely 5.60%, 6.03%, and 6.50% of the total weight of the mixture. The optimum asphalt content for the WMA is determine by using Marshall test with strength and fracture energy as the parameters. The optimum asphalt content for the WMA in this study is 6.03%. To determine the optimum ASA content, samples in mortar scale with various ASA content (0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4% of the asphalt weight) are made and tested using Direct Tension Test (DTT). Samples are also divided to two categories, dry samples and submerged samples, where the dry samples are not exposed to water, and submerged samples are immersed in water. The result from DTT shows that the optimum ASA level for WMA is 0.3% of the asphalt weight. The results are determined from the average results of strength and fracture energy parameters of samples with ASA compared to samples without ASA. The results for dry samples show 34.75% increase in strength for samples with 0.3% ASA and the submerged sample shows an increase of 25.35%. The fracture energy shows an increase of 91.04% for dry samples and 48.13% for the submerged sample with 0.3% ASA.
