Abstract

Adequate exposure of UV ray can help the process of natural vitamin D formation, however, excessive exposure can cause various negative effects. As a tropical country, UV exposure and UV index in Indonesia are extremely high. Ozone depletion due to global warming also reduces protection on earth’s atmosphere from UV ray exposure. One way to reduce negative effects due to UV exposure is sunscreen usage, however, proportion of sunscreen usage in Indonesia is still low. Not much research has been done on this topic, and several research that has been done has various results. This study is a categorical descriptive study with cross sectional study design. Data will be collected using online questionnaire that is distributed to 196 medical students of the Faculty of Medicine Pelita Harapan University. Data will be presented in table form using Microsoft Excel 2013. Data analysis will be carried out using SPSS 27 application. From 196 respondents it was found that 182 respondents (92.9%) had good level of knowledge and 102 respondents (52.1%) had good-very good behaviour regarding sunscreen usage. It is found that 30.1% respondents use sunscreen regularly. Majority of respondents admit that uncomfortable sensation is reducing the motivation to use sunscreen (66.8%), meanwhile avoiding sunburn increase the motivation to use sunscreen (82.1%). The most popular method other than sunscreen usage is walking in shades (73.5%). From this study it can be concluded that although the majority of respondents (92.2%) had good level of knowledge regarding sunscreen, it has not been followed by behaviour where only 52.1% had good-very good behaviour regarding sunscreen usage.
