Abstract

Car thefts are one of the most common criminal act in Indonesia. This is due to the relatively expensive cost of most vehicles that made it a prime target for thefts. This act often caused a lot of difficulty and significant financial loss for the victim. As an alternative solution to prevent and reduce this problem, a system to detect car thefts and track the car’s location based on Arduino is made. Arduino-based vehicle theft detection and tracking system is made using Arduino UNO as microcontroller, a DFRobot GSM/GPRS/GPS Shield to send SMS message, making calls and obtaining GPS coordinates, an accelerometer sensor for detecting movements on the car, and a Bluetooth module to control the system from a short distance with the user’s smartphone. This system works by detecting movement that occurs to and on the car. When it detects any movement that exceeds the specified safe threshold, the system will warn the user by making a phone call and sending SMS messages with a warning and the coordinates of the vehicle. The rate of success for the communication between Arduino UNO and other electronics used in the system are 100%. The accuracy of the accelerometer sensor is approximately 90%. The rate of success for the Bluetooth module in receiving remote commands from smartphones are 100% within three meters range and without any obstruction. The success rate in making calls and SMS messages delivery are satisfactory with it being always successful during trial. The success rate in retrieving GPS coordinates depends on the place and the strength of the signal received by the system.
