Abstract
The phase shift method (PSM) is an established technique for measuring the group delay of optical components. This thesis reports a study on the accuracy of the PSM measurement on the group delay in a two-port ring-resonator (TPRR) circuit. The study was performed by simulating the way that PSM measurement uses to extract the value of group delay and compare the results with the theoretical group delay calculated using transfer matrix method. Our study clarihes that the accuracy of PSM depends on the value of the modulating frequency (/'n) and the relative position of the coupling constant (rc) with respect to the critical coupling point. The simulation results show that PSM will produce blunting of the goup delay spectrum. Decreasing the modulatrng frequency will decrease the blunting effecto but on the other hand will also decrease the phase measurement accunrcy. Hence, a tade-offwill be required for an accurate group delay measurcment. Due to its extreme spectrum sharpness, critical point will be the worst for PSM accuracy. In our work, we use these device parameters: the effective index of ring and sfraight waveguide 1.6499, the attenuation constant of ring 0.8 dB/cm, the attenuation constant of straight waveguide 0.6 dB/cm, the round fiip length of ring 11916.4 pm, the wavelength of laser 1.55 pm, and the length of the TPRR 5 cm. For this caseo simulation shows that the measurement will produce an optimal accuracy at the/* of 10 MlIz. / Phase Shifi Method (Pslvf) merupakan suatu teknik pengukuran yang sering digunakan untuk mengukur group delay pada komponen optik. Pada tesis ini, akan dibahas bagaimana akurasi pengukuran graup delay pada Two-Port Ring-Resonalor (TPRR) dengan menggunakan PSM. Studi dilakukan dengan menyimulasikan pengukuran PSM dan membandingkan hasilnya dengan group delay yang dihitung secata teoritis dengan metode ffansfermatrix. Studi kami menunjukkan bahwa tingkat akurasi penggunaan PSM, sangat dipengaruhi oleh frekuensi pemodulasi dan posisi relatif konstanta kopling (r) terhadap posisi critical coupting. Hasil simulasi secara jelas memperlihatkan bahwa PSM akan menghasilkan penumpulan spektrum group delay yang tajam. Semakin kecil frekuensi pemodulasi, semakin berkuranglah efek penumpulan tersebu! akan tetapi pada sisi lain akan mengurangi akurasi pengukuran fasa. Oleh karena itq dalam hal ini diperlukan trade-off dalam pengukuran group delay. Karena pada critical coupling, ketajaman spekfum berada pada kondisi ekstrim, akurasi PSM di titik itu juga terburuk. Untuk sampel TPRR yang digunakan: indeks efektif pada ring dan straight waveguide adalah sama sebesar 1,6499, konstanta attenuasi pada rrng dan straight wweguide masing - masing adalah 0,8 dB/cm dan 0,6 dB/cm, keliling ring adalah 11916,4 pm, panjang gelombang laser adalah I,55 pm, dan panjang TPRR adalah 5 cm, pengukuran akan menghasilkan akurasi yang optimum, jika frekuensi pemodulasi yang digunakan dalam pengukuran adalah sebesar 10 MHz.
