Abstract

Uji coba rudal dan nuklir dari Korea Utara menimbulkan dan membuat meningkatkan kekhawatiran Republik Korea Selatan. Kontroversi seputar THAAD berasal dari masalah prosedural di mana keputusan penempatan dan pengumuman dibuat dengan tergesa-gesa tanpa pemahaman dan persetujuan publik, bahkan ketika efektivitas militer THAAD terhadap ancaman rudal balistik Korea Utara belum dikonfirmasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan studi pustaka dan data sekunder. Menggunakan perspektif realisme bahwa dalam masyarakat internasional yang lemah dan kuat, semua negara mengambil tindakan untuk memperluas kekuatan nasional negara masing-masing dan mereka dapat menggunakan kekuatan dan ancaman untuk memperoleh kekuasaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan inti dari permasalahan yang terjadi akibat dari pengembangan THAAD di Semenanjung Korea terletak pada hubungan konfrontatif antara Amerika Serikat dan Cina yang mana konflik tersebut merupakan manifestasi dari upaya kedua belah negara untuk memperebutkan dan memperluaskan pengaruhnya di Korea Selatan dan bahkan di kawasan Asia. Di tengah situasi yang konfrontatif antara kedua negara besar, terdapat kesulitan besar bagi Korea Selatan. Beratnya ancaman rudal dan nuklir Korea Utara yang semakin besar memaksa Korea Selatan untuk menerima sistem THAAD Amerika Serikat demi meningkatkan sistem pertahanan militernya. / The missile and nuclear tests of North Korea gave rise to and enhanced the Republic of South Korea. The controversy surrounding THAAD stems from a procedure in which deployment decisions and announcements are made hastily without understanding and approval, even when THAAD's military effectiveness against North Korea's ballistic missile threat has not been confirmed. This research uses a qualitative method with literature study and secondary data. Using the realism perspective that in a weak and strong international society, all countries take action to expand their respective national powers and they can use force and threats to gain power. The results show that the core of the problems that occurred as a result of the development of THAAD on the Korean Peninsula lies in the confrontational relationship between the United States and China in which the conflict is the result of the two countries' efforts to fight over and expand their influence in South Korea and even in the Asian region. During a confrontational situation between the two big countries, there is a big difficulty for South Korea. The severity of North Korea's growing missile and nuclear threat forced South Korea to accept the United States' THAAD system in order to improve its military defense system.
