Abstract

When choosing to migrate, an individual must be prepared to face challenges and risks, especially in romantic relationships, such as a lack of communication, physical interaction, and difficulties in maintaining relationship harmony. Long-distance relationships involve romantic relationships between two individuals who are located far apart, separated for a certain period of time, and hindered by physical contact. Therefore, migrant children who engage in long-distance relationships have different experiences compared to those who do not. This research aims to explore the communication patterns adopted by long-distance migrant children in building romantic relationships. The theoretical frameworks employed in this study are the equity theory, uncertainty management theory, and self-expansion theory. The research methodology utilized is qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. The research findings reveal that two out of three couples engaged in long-distance romantic relationships adopt a balanced split communication pattern, while the remaining couple follows an unbalanced split communication pattern. Communication plays a vital role in maintaining long-distance romantic relationships, particularly through the use of text messaging applications and video calls, which enable couples to communicate flexibly. Couples who actively listen, openly share feelings and experiences, and respond to each other's needs in a responsive manner demonstrate a balanced communication pattern. Building such communication patterns is crucial for strengthening harmony and satisfaction in long-distance romantic relationships.
