Abstract
Background: Burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. This syndrome is often experienced by medical students. It is believed that a person's capacity to actively listen may be impacted category that is needed in communicating. Pre-clinical students will enter a further level of study, called clinical clerkship, which necessitates interaction with a large number of people. With that, the ability to listen actively is needed.
Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relation between burnout and active listening skills in pre-clinical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pelita Harapan University.
Tools and Methods: The materials used in the study were questionnaire sheets containing informed consent, personal data, Active Listening Skills Inventory Questionnaire, and Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey (MBI-SS) Questionnaire. The google form link containing the questionnaire will be given to pre-clinical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pelita Harapan University Class of 2020 to 2022. The collected data will then be analyzed by researchers.
Result and Discussion: From this study, 63 respondents (17.4%) experienced burnout and 320 respondents (88.2%) had low active listening skills. The incidence of burnout is considered low when compared to studies that have been conducted. The majority of students' active listening skills are still relatively low. Based on chi- square analysis, respondents who experience burnout are at risk of having a low level of active listening ability of 82% and there is a significant relationship between burnout and active listening ability. (OR= 4.828, CI=1.137-20.150; P: 0.033).
Conclusion: The incidence of burnout is considered low when compared to studies that have been conducted. The majority of students' active listening skills are still relatively low. Burnout is a risk factor for low-level active listening and there is a significant relationship between burnout and active listening.
