Abstract

Kata kunci: acne vulgaris, facial hygiene, GAGS / Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic skin disease characterized by blockages or inflammation in the pilosebaceous unit, which are mostly found in the face, neck, upper chest, shoulders, and back. The prevalence of AV in Indonesia continues to rise each year. The pathogenesis and risk factors of AV are multifactorial. Facial hygiene refers to the cleanliness of the skin of the face and other facial components. Proper facial hygiene practices can remove dirt, sebum, oil, exfoliated corneum cells, as well as prevent the colonization of microorganisms including P. acnes. Purpose: To determine the relationship between facial hygiene and the severity of acne vulgaris in female pre-clinical medical students of Pelita Harapan University Methods: This research uses a cross-sectional study design on 52 female pre-clinical medical students at Pelita Harapan University, selected using consecutive sampling method. Data were collected through GAGS questionnaire and Facial Cleansing Questionnaire by Faheem 2010 via Google Forms, followed by respondents submitting photos of their facial lesions to be objectively confirmed by the researcher. The collected data will then be tabulated into Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365 version) and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 with bivariate analysis methods such as the Chi-Square test or an alternative method, the Fisher Exact test. Data Analysis Results: The research results showed that among the respondents, there were 51 individuals (98.2%) with mild AV and 1 individual (1.9%) with severe AV. A total of 16 individuals (30.8%) had good facial hygiene and 36 individuals (69.2%) had poor facial hygiene. The data analysis revealed a P-value of 1.0. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between facial hygiene and the severity of acne vulgaris in female pre-clinical medical students of Pelita Harapan University.
