Abstract

This research discusses the use of fashion as a medium for identity communication and a form of resistance by the marginal community in South Jakarta. The primary issue explored is how fashion within this community is used to challenge mainstream fashion trends that are perceived to express capitalism and consumerism. The aim of this study is to understand the meaning of fashion as a symbol of identity and as a form of resistance by the punk community against dominant norms. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving in-depth interviews with community members. The findings indicate that fashion within the marginal community serves not only as an aesthetic choice but also as a non- verbal communication medium to convey anti-capitalist values, independence, and solidarity. The DIY (Do It Yourself) practice is essential within this community, enabling them to create fashion authentically, apart from mainstream fashion industry influences. For future research, it is suggested to further explore how the marginal subculture interacts with popular culture and its impact on the social identity of community members.
