Abstract

The departure of a child in a family is an event that is certain to happen. This event brings many changes in the family. The impact of the departure itself is often experienced negatively, especially for housewives. The departure of a child causes housewives to be sad, depressed, lonely, and have other negative responses. This response is called empty nest syndrome. Empty nest syndrome can be reduced if housewives establish meaningful relationships with their children. This perception of meaningfulness is called mattering to children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mattering to children and the level of empty nest syndrome in middle-aged housewives in Indonesia. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design and a correlational research method with 107 middle-aged housewives in Indonesia. This study used the measuring instruments The Mattering Index (MI) and Empty Nest Syndrome Scale - Indian Form (ENS-IF). The results of the study showed that there was a significant negative relationship between caring for children and the level of empty nest syndrome in housewives (r=-.686, p<.001). The lower the caring of housewives, the higher the level of empty nest syndrome they have.
