Abstract
Under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration (2016–2022), press freedom in the Philippines encountered significant threats. Media organizations, particularly Rappler, faced systemic repression, including legal harassment, accusations of foreign ownership, and direct threats to its journalists. These measures aimed to silence dissent and weaken media independence. This study explores Rappler’s pivotal role in resisting these authoritarian pressures, focusing on its strategies to combat disinformation, expose government abuses, and promote global advocacy for democracy and human rights. Grounded in liberalism theory and human rights concepts, this research employs a qualitative case study approach, utilizing secondary data and interviews. Key findings reveal Rappler’s innovative strategies, such as in-depth investigative journalism, rigorous fact-checking, partnerships with civil society, and active engagement in international advocacy. Despite the high risks, Rappler courageously documented and exposed critical issues, including extrajudicial killings associated with Duterte’s war on drugs. These efforts exemplified the power of independent journalism in times of crisis. This thesis emphasizes the broader significance of Rappler’s fight for press freedom, not only as a safeguard for democracy in the Philippines but also as a beacon for global awareness. Rappler’s resilience serves as a powerful example of the essential role independent journalism plays in challenging repression, protecting human rights, and upholding democratic values worldwide.
