Abstract
Penting bagi pemerintah untuk melakukan penguatan kebijakan hilirisasi nikel dan pengembangan lembaga untuk memaksimalkan potensi ekonomi dan menghadapi tantangan dari ekspansi geopolitik Tiongkok./China, as a country with a large area and large population, has developed rapidly since its independence in 1949. Through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China is trying to expand its geopolitical influence in Indonesia, a country which is rich in it’s nickel reserves. This research aims to examine China's geopolitical strategy in utilizing Indonesian nickel. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive methods, this research describes China's geopolitical expansion efforts in Indonesia, especially regarding the exploitation of nickel mines and smelters. Realism theory is used to answer the research questions. China utilizes multinational company investments in the nickel mining and smelting industry as a strategy for its geopolitical expansion. China's interference in majority of stakeholders is seen on a massive scale in Indonesia. However, exploitation of Indonesian nickel occurs for China's economic interests and to expand its geopolitical influence. China's BRI policy has had a significant impact on Indonesia. Chinese investment has a clear initial goal of expanding market access and geopolitical influence. Stakeholders in nickel smelters and exports of nickel derivative products are strategies implemented by China. It is important for the government to strengthen nickel downstream policies and institutional development to maximize economic potential and face the challenges of China's geopolitical expansion.
