Abstract

During emerging adulthood, individuals are undergoing a transitional phase into adulthood where they are defining themselves by evaluating their self-worth based on both self appraisal and the opinions of those around them, including their peers. A developmental task at this stage is intimacy, where individuals build and maintain meaningful friendships. While ideal friendships provide a safe space for mutual support, they can also lead to interpersonal conflicts. These experiences influence an individual’s perception of self and their role within friendships. This study aims to investigate whether mattering to peers has an impact on friendship quality in emerging adulthood. Studies on mattering to peers has not been widely discussed in Indonesia, while the phenomenon and impact of a non-ideal friendship quality are quite well-depicted in Indonesia. This research uses quantitative research method with correlational and cross-sectional research design. Data was collected from 450 participants through purposive sampling. The independent variable of this research is mattering to peers, measured using The Mattering Index (MI). The dependent variable of this research is friendship quality, measured using Friendship Quality Scale (FQS). Data was analyzed using Jeffrey's Amazing Statistics Program (JASP), and a linear regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis. The results showed a significant positive impact of mattering to peers on friendship quality in emerging adulthood. The majority of participants in this study had high levels of both mattering to peers and friendship quality.
