Abstract

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a set of symptoms in the eyes and vision due to excessive eye activity when using a computer/laptop. Nursing students are a group that is vulnerable to CVS due to the high intensity of computer use. In 2022, as many as 190 (83.7%) nursing students at a university experienced CVS symptoms (Amalia, 2022). This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of CVS in nursing students at a private university in western Indonesia. This study used a correlational quantitative method with a cross-sectional research design. The sample in this study amounted to 341 people using Convenience sampling technique. The instruments in the study used the Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS-Smart) questionnaire and the CVS risk factors questionnaire consisting of gender variables, duration of computer/laptop use, length of break in computer/laptop use, use of eye protection with anti blue ray and anti glare screen, and visibility between eyes and computer/laptop. The data analysis used was univariate and bivariate tests. The results showed a significant relationship between gender (p=0.024) and the duration of computer/laptop use without interspersed with other activities (p=0.001) with the incidence of CVS. Meanwhile, the variables of rest duration, use of eye protection, and visibility did not show a significant relationship (p-value> 0.05). Thus, gender and duration of computer/laptop use are factors that are significantly associated with the incidence of CVS. Therefore, nursing students are advised to pay attention to these risk factors to prevent the occurrence of CVS when using a computer/laptop.
