Abstract

Bullying in the nursing profession has serious implications for both the mental and physical health of nurses. It contributes to reduced job satisfaction and increased turnover intentions, ultimately compromising the quality of patient care. Evidence from multiple studies confirms that workplace bullying is widespread among nurses, highlighting the urgent need for effective interventions to foster supportive work environments. This scoping review aimed to explore and synthesize existing literature on the impact of bullying on nurses’ professional lives. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using four databases—PubMed, EBSCO, Scopus, and Medline—targeting primary studies, both qualitative and quantitative, that involved nurses as the population, workplace bullying and its impact on professional life as the concept, and healthcare settings globally as the context. Articles were selected based on inclusion criteria, screened and reviewed through Covidence, and analyzed using the scoping review framework by Levac et al. (2010). A total of 11 relevant studies were included in the analysis. Two major themes emerged: professional impact and personal impact, with seven supporting subthemes identified. The findings revealed that bullying significantly disrupts nurses' professional lives—contributing to job stress, intention to leave, and a decline in patient care quality—while also affecting their personal well-being through decreased mental health and resilience. These results emphasize that bullying in nursing is not merely an interpersonal conflict but a systemic issue, demanding comprehensive organizational interventions, including strong anti-bullying policies, supportive leadership, and strategies to strengthen nurses’ emotional and psychological resilience.
