Abstract
Background: Based on survey by Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association there is an increase of 51.8% of gadget usage in 2016. The prevalence of sleeping problems in Indonesia is 10% out of 238 million people which makes it 23.8 million people. Further research in the association between gadget usage and insomnia is needed due to academic level burden of medical and nursing students which are higher than other major students. Therefore, they are more susceptible to have sleeping problems. Aim: To assess the association of gadget usage towards insomnia in medical and nursing students of Universitas Pelita Harapan. Material and Method: This research designed as analytical cross-sectional. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling which took students from batch 2015-2017 as samples. 196 samples were acquired after inclusion and exclusion criteria were fulfilled. The usage of gadget was assessed using gadget usage questionnaire (duration, type, and total) and insomnia level was assessed using Insomnia Rating Scale (IRS). The statistical test used the Chi Square test. Result: The data analysis by chi square showed there are 59.2% students which have insomnia with 52.6% having mild insomnia and 7.1% having moderate insomnia. Significance between gadget usage and insomnia was not found (p=0.392). However, significance in other factor such as major (p=<0.001), grade point average (p=0.004), activity (p=0.003), and caffeine consumption at night (p=0.04) was observed. Conclusion: There is no significant relation between the use of gadget with insomnia in medical and nursing students of Universitas Pelita Harapan. However, other factors such as major, grade point average, activity, and caffeine consumption / Latar Belakang: Berdasarkan survei Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia terjadi peningkatan penggunaan gadget tahun 2016 sebesar 51.8% dari 260 juta penduduk.
