Abstract
Fenomena long distance relationships (LDR) semakin sering muncul pada individu dewasa muda. / The phenomenon of Long Distance Relationships (LDR) is increasingly common in young adults. In that case, differences in attachment styles can affect empathy in individuals who are undergoing LDR. Young adults who are undergoing LDR with different attachment styles will provide different patterns of empathy. In previous studies there are still contradictions, namely there are studies said that the LDR cannot be maintained, but there are also studies said that LDR can be maintained through empathy. Thus, researcher are encouraged to examine the effect of attachment styles on empathy in young adults who are undergoing LDR. The subjects in this study were 125 young adults heterosexual who underwent LDR by distributing online questionnaires. The measuring instrument used in this study is the Relationship Scale Questionnaire which consists of 15 items with a reliability coefficient of 0.51 - 0.66, and an Interpersonal Reactivity Index which consists of 21 items with a reliability coefficient of 0.84. The correlation test uses Spearman’s Correlation because the data distribution is abnormal, and the results obtained are p-value of 0.00 for secure attachment style, 0.00 for preoccupied attachment style, 0.24 for dismissing attachment style, and 0.13 for fearful attachment style. In addition, the results of regression tests using Linear Regression showed a regression coefficient of 0.00 for secure attachment style, 0.00 for preoccupied attachment style, 0.21 for dismissing attachment style, and 0.10 for fearful attachment style. Thus, this study proves that secure attachment style and preoccupied attachment style have an effect on empathy, while dismissing attachment style and fearful attachment style do not affect empathy.
