Abstract
Indonesia is an archipelago that is rich in flora diversity. One of the plants with the highest distribution level in Indonesia is a banana plant . This plant is rich in benefits; the fruit and leaves are often used , but this does not apply to the barks that are found in pseudo stems of the plants. Banana bark has a beautiful and distinctive pattern and color of the fiber , but it is a leftover crop that is not utilized or wasted .
Not infrequently locals are made aware of this material potential. In addition to being a wrapping media, bark is also used as a variety of crafts, such as bags. However, the efforts of citizens are considered less successful, due to the lack of design knowledge and knowledge of product and market relevance.
Based on the banana bark’s characteristics, through innovative processing and design techniques based on knowledge of the market needs of the bag, banana bark is utilized into a contemporary bag through weaving techniques with leather. Becoming so, after going through observation, 14 stages of material explorations, as well as literature studies regarding related materials. Weaving bark with leather increases strength, value, function, and effectiveness of the bark. Before weaving, Surface smoothing techniques, anti-fungal and waterproof finishing are applied to increase the shelf life of the material. It is hoped that this product can shift banana bark from wasted material into unique and innovative products with high relevance market needs.
