Abstract

Pekerja Rumah Tangga (PRT) atau yang akrab disebut dengan pembantu rumah tangga, merupakan sebuah pekerjaan yang lazim di Indonesia. Hal ini disebabkan oleh jumlahnya yang mencapai 2,5 juta warga sehingga berdampak dalam mengeliminasi tingkat pengangguran dalam berbagai daerah di Indonesia, khususnya daerah perkotaan. Melihat jumlah yang besar warga Indonesia yang bekerja sebagai Pekerja Rumah Tangga serta kontribusi yang mereka berikan, tidak ada regulasi yang mengatur perlindungan bagi para PRT. Padahal, begitu banyak kasus yang menimpa terutama dalam perihal kekerasan dan hak mereka sebagai pekerja. PRT dapat digolongkan dalam kaum minoritas, sehingga mereka memerlukan sebuah institusi untuk membela mereka. Media sebagai sarana pelayanan publik berperan dalam membantu PRT menyuarakan hak-haknya. Akan tetapi, minimnya frekuensi pemberitaan serta bagaimana media mengonstruksi pemberitaan mengenai PRT, memperlihatkan bahwa media tidak berperan sebagai advokasi, tetapi mengembalikan bagaimana persepsi publik mengenai PRT. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan ilustrasi tentang bagaimana media mengonstruksi berita mengenai PRT. Media Tribunnews serta Republika dipilih karena kedua media tersebut paling banyak memberitakan mengenai isu PRT. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini memberikan gambaran tentang bagaimana seharusnya media memberitakan mengenai PRT. / Domestic Workers or usually known as domestic helpers, are people who work in one of the informal sectors in Indonesia. This is a commonly found profession, seen by the fact that there are 2,5 million people who work as domestic workers in Indonesia. Due to the large number of people who work as domestic workers and looking further in how big the contribution that they have given to the country, there are no legals that protects their rights. In fact, there are p;emty of cases like physical violenes that lead to death, and also violences of their rights as workers. Domestic workers are categorized as the minority in the sociey, because of how society understands them. This leads to the understanding of why they need an institution to take the role as their voice. Media, as an institution who serves the public, has the role to help domestic workers in giving their voice. In reality, media is considered paying a minimun concern towards this issue. The minimum concern can be seen by the little number of news regarding the topic, and the news are constructed to a more thematic areas just like domestic workers as victims of physical violences, and many more. The evidences have proved that media doesn't act for advocating, but come back again, rebuilding and increasing how society's perceptions toward domestic workers. Thus, the purpose of this research is to give the illustration regarding how media construct the news about domestic workers. Tribunnews and Republika are used in this research because of the number of news they have regarding the topic. Further, this research give the illustration in how media should construct the news regarding domestic workers in Indonesia.
