Abstract

Velvet apple is a fruit having antioxidant activity. Due to its smell and the astringent taste, most people do not like this fruit. This study was aimed to observed the antioxidant activity of some parts of this fruit. The peel, flesh and seed of velvet apple were successively extracted with three types of solvent having different polarity (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol). Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid from the extract obtained were analyzed. The parts of fruit having the highest antioxidant activity was subsequently identified with GC MS and the presence of tannin was also qualitatively analyzed. The highest antioxidant activity as well as total phenolic, with 20.872 ppm and 80.837 mg TAE/g extract, was found in extract seed that obtained by ethyl acetate. The highest total flavonoid was found in seed extract with 3.448 mg QE/g extract. There was interaction between the types of solvent and parts of fruit that significantly affect the result of antioxidant activity and total phenolic but only the parts of fruit significantly affected the total flavonoid. From the qualitative test of tannin, the result showed that the seed extract contained tannin. The result of identification by GC-MS showed that the 1,2,3-benzetriol, phenol 2,4-bis(1,1- 2573;4=63;4=6$% @-tocopherol, and vitamin E was the component that functioned as the source of antioxidant in velvet apple.
