Abstract

Based on the pretest which was done in Grade 3 at XYZ School, Karawaci, the researcher found that students had problems in organizing their writing in the subject of Language Arts. The result of the pretest indicates that 6 out of 15 students scored below the class average. Based on this problem, the researcher implemented Four Square Writing Method to help the students improve their writing skills. In order to see students’ improvement in their writing skills, the researcher conducted research about the increase of students writing skills in pre-writing stage (organization) by using Four Square Writing Method. This research was conducted from November 2-12, 2016 using the pre�experiment research method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. This method was used to know the significance of the increase of students’ writing skills in prewriting stage (organization) by comparing the pretest and the posttest results. The subjects of this research were 15 third grade students. This research used a rubric as the instrument. The data analysis technique used the N-Gain to measure the significant increase between pretest and posttest and also binomial test to analyze the statistical hypothesis. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that there was an increase of student writing skill between the pretest and the posttest. The Four Square Writing Method improved students’ writing skills in pre-writing stage. Therefore, it can be concluded that Four Square Writing Method can increase students’ writing skills score in pre-writing stage (organization)./Berdasarkan pre-test yang telah dilaksanakan di Kelas 3 Sekolah XYZ, Karawaci, peneliti menemukan bahwa para siswa memiliki masalah dalam mengorganisir tulisan mereka dalam kelas Bahasa (Inggris). Hasil dari pre-test mengindikasikan 6 dari 15 siswa mendapat nilai dibawah rata-rata kelas. Berdasarkan dari masalah tersebut, peneliti menerapkan Four Square Writing Method untuk membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mereka. Untuk menelaah peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa, maka, peneliti melaksanakan sebuah penelitian tentang peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam tahapan pramenulis (mengorganisir) dengan menggunakan Four Square Writing Method. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari tanggal 2 November sampai 12 November 2016 dengan menggunakan metode penelitian pra-eksperimen dengan desain penelitian one group pretest-posttest. Metode ini digunakan untuk menelaah peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam tahapan pramenulis (mengorganisir) dengan melihat perbandingan hasil antara pretest dengan posttest yang siswa kerjakan. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 15 murid kelas 3. Intrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah sebuah rubrik. Penelitian ini menggunakan uji N-Gain untuk mengukur peningkatan yang signifikan antara pretest dan posttest dan juga uji binomial untuk menganalisa hipotesis statistik. Berdasarkan hasil analisa data, peneliti menemukan adanya peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa antara pretest dan posttest siswa. Four Square Writing Method memberikan dampak terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa terutama terdapat peningkatan dalam mengorganisir tulisan. Maka dari itu, dapat di nyatakan bahwa Four Square Writing Method meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa pada tahapan pra-menulis yaitu mengorganisir.
