Abstract
ABSTRACT Reading and writing skills are the part of the language skill. Reading and writing skills are important for everyone and especially to the grade 1 students in primary school. Based on observations during the learning process, grade 1 students had less skill in reading and writing. The facts that happened to grade 1 students are students’ writing was not neat, students had problem to differentiate some letters (the examples are u and v, b and d, p and q), and students needed teacher’s help to dictate the letters. Students’ reading skill is also very lacking because students have to spell before reading a word. Due to the lack of reading and writing skills, students experience difficulties in following the lessons because students need more time to write and read. To overcome this problem, teacher applied the drill method to help students improve their reading and writing skills. After applying the drill method, the students experience development in reading and writing skills. Therefore, it can be concluded that the drill method is a good method to be applied to grade 1 students because the drill method can help students improve their reading and writing skills.
