Abstract

Problem solving is important in learning mathematics. It is to see students’ conceptual understanding. Problem solving ability is usually practiced by the use of word problem. However, in the teaching and learning process, the researcher found that the students find it difficult for them. Thus, this research conducted to know whether the drill method increased Grade VI students’ problem solving ability and how the drill method increased Grade VI students’ problem solving ability. The drill method was implemented to increase students’ ability in mathematical problem solving. Classroom Action Research (CAR) with Pelton’s model was used as the method of this research. The research was done from the September 5 to October 26, 2018. The subjects were 21 students from grade VI students at a Christian Elementary School in Makassar. Researcher used several instruments such as lesson plans, students’ outcomes, mentor’s teacher feedback sheets, reflective journals, and students’ reflections. Based on the results, it shown that the use of drill method increased the students’ ability of solving problems by 11%. It consisted of the improvement of reading indicator as much as 11%, comprehension indicator as much as 12%, transformation indicator as much as 13%, encoding indicator as much as 20%, and carefulness indicator as much as 17%. Nevertheless, there was a decrease in the process skill indicator by 9%. The steps of drill method that could increase students’ problem solving ability were before drill phase, during drill phase, and after drill phase.
