Abstract

Pemahaman konsep matematis merupakan salah satu tujuan penting ketika mempelajari matematika, dikarenakan matematika menekankan pada konsep bukan hanya hafalan rumus. Ketika peneliti mengajar, terlihat kurangnya pemahaman konsep matematis siswa. Terlihat ketika siswa kesulitan mengikuti pembelajaran dan mengerjakan formatif. Pada formatif pertama terdapat 63% siswa yang tidak lulus KKM dan pada formatif kedua terdapat 91% siswa yang tidak lulus KKM. Berdasarkan permasalahan yang ditemukan, peneliti menerapkan model pembelajaran student facilitator and explaining sebagai solusi dari permasalahan yang ditemukan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui penerapan model pembelajaran student facilitator and explaining dapat meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa dan mengetahui langkah-langkah penerapan model pembelajaran student facilitator and explaining untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian tindakan kelas dengan model Pelton. Model Pelton terdiri dari lima tahapan yaitu identifikasi masalah, pengumpulan data, perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, dan asesmen/luaran. Penelitian ini dilakukan di kelas VIII pada salah satu SMP Kristen di Medan dengan jumlah siswa 35 siswa. Penelitian ini berlangsung pada tanggal 16 Agustus 2018 sampai 17 September 2018. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah RPP, lembar umpan balik guru mentor, lembar observasi, jurnal refleksi peneliti, dan tes. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran student facilitator and explaining dapat meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa pada siswa. Dengan peningkatan 34% pada indikator pertama, 6% pada indikator kedua, 40% pada indikator ketiga, dan 69% pada indikator keempat. Pemahaman konsep matematis siswa dapat ditingkatkan dengan empat tahap utama dari student facilitator and explaining yaitu, guru mendemonstrasikan atau menyajikan materi, guru menetapkan beberapa siswa unggul sebagai tutor sebaya, guru memberikan kesempatan kepada siswa yang ditunjuk sebagai tutor sebaya untuk menjelaskan kepada siswa lainnya, dan verifikasi serta refleksi./ Mathematics conceptual understanding is one of the important objectives in learning mathematics, because it emphasizes on concept rather than recalling formula. During the teaching and learning process, there was lack of students’ mathematics conceptual understanding. It was seen when the students had problem following the learning process and did the formative test. On formative one, there were 63% students did not pass the passing grade and on formative two there were 91% students did not pass the passing grade. According to the issues found, the researcher implemented student facilitator and explaining learning model as the solution to solve the problem. The purposes of this research are to know the implementation of student facilitator and explaining learning model can improve students’ mathematics conceptual understanding and to know the steps of the implementation of student facilitator and explaining learning model to improve students’ mathematics conceptual understanding. The research method used is classroom action research according to Pelton’s model. Pelton’s model consists of five steps which are issue identification, data collection, action planning, plan activation, and outcome assessment. This research was conducted in grade VIII at one of Christian junior high school in Medan consist of 35 students. The research was started on August 16th 2018 until September 17th 2018. The instruments used are lesson plan, mentor feedback form, observation sheet, journal reflection, and test. The result of the research shows that the implementation of student facilitator and explaining learning model could improve students’ mathematics conceptual understanding. 34% improvement on the first indicator, 6% on second indicator, 40% on third indicator, and 69% on forth indicator. Students’ mathematics conceptual understanding can be improved through four main steps of student facilitator and explaining learning model which are, teacher demonstrate or present the material, teacher choose several excellent students as peer tutors, teacher gives opportunity to students who are chosen as peer tutors to explain to other students, then verification and reflection.
