Abstract

In mid-October 2019, a community named “Crosshijaber,” consisting of male crossdressers with habits of wearing hijab, went viral in social media. Not long, the story of the community chained out in various mainstream media, including two top television stations Metro TV and TV One. The two stations reported the story with the same point of view. The fact that there is a shared view between the two different stationswhen reporting the community attracts the researcher’s attention. This research employs fantasy theme analysis, which is the main analysis tool of the Symbolic Convergence Theory. Primary data are collected through observing news packages of Crosshijaber in Metro TV and TV One. Secondary data are collected through observation to online forum of Indonesian crossdresser and library studies. In this study, the author finds four fantasy themes chaining out in the reports of Crosshijaber community in Metro TV and TV One. The chaining fantasy themes indicate a convergence of the two stations when reporting the Crosshijaber community. The fantasy themes also form a rhetorical vision, which imply a rejection of the community. Further, the rhetorical vision shows heteronormative ideology working behind the news packages of Crosshijaber.
