Abstract
The need of the students, as they come to practical life, to think critically and
solve problems independently has led to the changing of approach that teachers
use in the classrooms. A teacher-centered classroom, with the students as passive
listeners, has been irrelevant to cater the students‟ needs. Inquiry-Based Learning
(IBL) has been widely known as a powerful approach to equip students with both
critical thinking and problem-solving skill as it provides students with hands-on,
minds-on, and meaningful experiences. Thus, the writer conducted an evaluative
case study, focusing on the implementation of IBL on Year 2 students in XYZ
Primary School. The purpose of this study is to explore how XYZ School has
implemented IBL on Year 2 students and how IBL had a role in improving
students‟ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Classroom observation and
interviews were utilized as the instruments to collect the data of this study. The
finding of this study shows that the school has effectively implemented IBL by
following Kath Murdoch‟s (2015, 78) Inquiry Cycle. It is also found that IBL has
a role to enhance the development of Year 2 students‟ critical thinking and
problem-solving skills through some aspects, such as visible thinking strategy and
essential questions.
