Abstract

One of the purposes of learning process is to develop students’ good thinking skills, especially the critical thinking skills. In order to improve students’ critical thinking skill, Life Community School, the school that uses Home Schooling system, often uses word problems in Mathematics. Students of this school often find problems in solving those word problems. It is also experienced especially by the third grade students of that Elementary School in which the main topic of the mathematics is multiplication. This research was intended to analyze the effect of role playing on the skills of the critical thinking and the learning achievement on mathematics of third grade students of Elementary School on word problems on the topic of multiplication. This research used the experiment technique of one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of research were 8 students whose ages were from 7 to 8 years old and 2 students with disabilities whose ages were from 9 to 10 years old. After they got the treatment, a variaty of role playing for six meetings, the result showed that there was an effect at a moderate level of the role playing on the students’ critical thinking skills (the value of N-gain was 0.65). There was also an effect at a moderate level on the students’ learning achievement in mathematics on multiplication word problems ( the value of N-gain was 0.62). / Salah satu tujuan dari proses pembelajaran adalah untuk mendapatkan kemampuan berpikir yang baik, salah satunya adalah kemampuan berpikir kritis. Untuk melatih kemampuan berpikir kritis, Life Community School, sekolah yang menggunakan sistem Home Schooling sering menggunakan soal cerita pada pelajaran Matematika. Siswa pada sekolah ini sering mengalami kesulitan dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan yang ada pada soal cerita tersebut. Khususnya pada siswa kelas 3 SD, di mana topik utama pelajaran Matemtika mereka adalah perkalian. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk melihat bagaimana pengaruh bermain peran dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis dan prestasi belajar Matematika siswa kelas 3 SD tentang soal cerita dengan topik perkalian. Penelitian menggunakan teknik eksperimen dengan tipe rancangan one-group pretest-posttest design. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 8 orang siswa yang berusia 7-8 tahun dan 2 orang siswa berkebutuhan khusus yang berusia 9-10 tahun. Setelah diberikan perlakuan yaitu variasi bermain peran selama 6 kali pertemuan. Didapati bahwa terdapat pengaruh pada tingkat sedang kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dengan nilai N-gain 0.65 dan terdapat pengaruh pada tingkat sedang terhadap prestasi belajar Matematika siswa tentang soal cerita dengan topik perkalian dengan nilai N-gain 0.62.
