Dalam dunia desain, tidak ada teori yang pasti mengenai proses desain dimana berawal dari munculnya permasalahan desain untuk menghasilkan sebuah solusi desain. Teori hanya sebagai dasar jalannya proses desain dan akan berkembang seiring bertambahnya pengalaman lapangan seorang desainer menjadi sebuah pedoman dan prinsip dalam proses desain yang dinamakan Guiding Principles. Pada proses desain, Guiding Principles yang telah dijadikan pedoman sesorang desainer terkadang juga tidak dapat digunakan pada setiap proyek, maka dari itu desainer perlu memiliki strategi dalam melihat beberapa sudut pandang dalam desain untuk memecahkan masalah desain. Strategi setiap desainer pun dapat berbeda-beda tergantung pada klien dan target desain. Metode menggunakan pengolahan kualitatif berdasarkan data yang diperoleh penulis selama sembilan bulan magang di kantor TSDS. Perolehan data berdasarkan catatan lapangan penulis sebagai partisipan dalam proses desain proyek residensial Bu Refina. Hasil catatan lapangan, observasi langsung, dan wawancara terhadap pengguna serta desainer yang terlibat untuk mendapatkan strategi desain yang diterapkan oleh Principal TSDS dalam proses desain proyek residensial. Tahapan studi dalam menentukan strategi desain yang tepat pada suatu proyek, yaitu desainer perlu menurunkan ego dan melihat dari sudut pandang klien untuk memahami kebutuhan klien. Upaya penting lainnya yang perlu dilakukan adalah menjalin hubungan baik dengan klien agar klien lebih terbuka untuk berdiskusi. Hal ini memudahkan penentuan perkembangan arah desain yang mempengaruhi suasana dan pengalaman ruang. Dalam penelitian ini diharapkan bagaimana strategi yang dilakukan desainer dapat menciptakan desain yang ideal bagi klien dapat terpaparkan dengan jelas guna menginspirasi para desainer yang terjun di profesi desain interior/In the world of design, there’s no definite theory about design process, starts by the emergence of design problems, which leads into design solutions as a response to the occurring problems ahead. Design theory holds a role of guidance, evolves along with the experiences a designer faced in the actual design field, which eventually sets into a set of guiding principles as a framework throughout the design process. Although the dominancy of the guiding principles applications in design process are apparent, some circumstances encountered on projects may not be applicable. A designer requires a strategy to overcome any boundaries by gaining a broader view in different perspectives, as a way into solving a design problem. Every design is different one another, each has their own strategy depends on the client and the design’s target itself. Data collection in the following qualitative research are obtained by the writer as an intern in TSDS, through direct observation and participation. Framing on the design process, instrumental study case method is used to further study on the company’s project: a residential project of Bu Refina. The writer outlook the principal’s strategy in materiality principles application in the project through analysis of the datas: from personal fieldnotes as an intern, to interviews to the related subjects on this research, such as designers involved in the project. This research aims to determine the proper design strategy on project, which one has to put ego aside and see with clarity from the client’s perspective in order to gain an understandment in the user needs. The other significant key is creating a good relation with the clients, aids into the openess and comfort of the client in discussions into ideal design solutions. This strategy facilitates the determination of design development which could affect the whole ambience and spatial experiences in interior design. The writer hopes the principal’s strategy in materiality principles application towards design process could be unveiled into a study that inspires other designers in the interior design profession.
