Abstract
Think Pair Share is a collaborative learning method that gives students the
opportunity to build knowledge through discussion in their learning process. This
study attempts to answer the question whether Think Pair Share method can
improve reading, critical thinking, and student collaboration in English language
learning and to find what obstacles arise in the application of Think Pair Share in
the classroom. This study is a pre-experimental research design. The subjects of this
study were 26 grade-eight students of Charitas Jakarta Middle School in the year
2017-2018. Data analisis using n-gain that compares the pretest and posttest scores
showed that the three research variables experienced an increase, namely N-gain
reading skills of 0.4 (medium category), N-gain critical thinking skills of 0.3
(medium category) and N-gain collaboration skills of 0.4 (medium category).
Problems arose in this study were limited time for the study, the number of groups
was too large, and student attendance that affected the pairing. / Metode pembelajaran kooperatif think pair share merupakan metode yang
memberi kesempatan kepada siswa untuk membangun pengetahuan melalui diskusi
dalam proses belajar. Penelitian ini mencoba menjawab pertanyaan apakah metode
Think Pair Share dapat meningkatkan keterampilan membaca, berpikir kritis, dan
kerjasama siswa dalam pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan apa saja kendala yang muncul
dalam penerapan think pair share di kelas. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan
desain penelitian pre-eksperimental. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 26 siswa kelas
VIIIC SMP Charitas Tahun Pelajaran 2017-2018. Pengolahan data dengan
menggunakan perbandingan N-gain pretest dan posttest menujukkan peningkatan
terhadap ketiga variabel yaitu N-Gain keterampilan membaca sebesar 0,4 (kategori
sedang), N-Gain keterampilan berpikir kritis sebesar 0,3 (kategori sedang) dan NGain keterampilan kerjasama sebesar 0,4 (kategori sedang). Kendala yang
ditemukan adalah waktu penelitian yang terlalu singkat, jumlah kelompok yang
terlalu besar, dan kehadiran siswa yang mempengaruhi pairing.
