Abstract

The way teacher delivers instruction to the students in the classroom is important because it influences students’ learning process and learning outcomes. When students do not do what the teacher expected them to do during learning, such as expressing misbehavior and being disruptive in the classroom, there might be problems with the way deliver instruction to the students. To give more effective instructions, in which the students do what the teacher expected them to do, the researcher applied a direct instruction delivered in chunk strategy to the students during the learning. The researcher also improved the way the researcher said instructions to the students using direct language instead of indirect language. The data of the instructions applied for the students and the effect of direct instruction delivered in chunks was collected from one of the Christian private schools in Bogor, specifically from the Grade 8 students. The result of the research shows that the students do the teacher’s directions better when they were given instructions in direct language instead of indirect language. The direct instruction delivered in the chunking strategy also helps students know what to do in the classroom and be more directed during the learning. The instruments that the researcher used are practicum observation forms, lesson plans, and journal reflections./ Cara guru menyampaikan instruksi kepada siswa di dalam kelas penting karena ia mempengaruhi proses dan hasil belajar siswa. Ketika siswa tidak melakukan yang guru harapkan mereka lakukan dalam pembelajaran, seperti mengekspresikan perilaku buruk dan mengganggu di dalam kelas, maka kemungkinan terdapat masalah dalam cara guru menyampaikan instruksi kepada siswa. Demi memberi instruksi yang lebih efektif, saat siswa melakukan apa yang diharapkan guru untuk mereka lakukan, peneliti menerapkan strategi instruksi langsung yang disampaikan dalam bentuk chunk (bongkahan) kepada siswa selama pembelajaran. Peneliti juga memperbaiki caranya dalam menyampaikan instruksi kepada siswa menggunakan bahasa langsung daripada bahasa tidak langsung. Data tentang instruksi yang diimplementasikan kepada siswa dan pengaruh instruksi langsung yang disampaikan dalam bentuk chunk diambil dari salah satu sekolah swasta Kristen di Bogor, terutama dari siswa kelas 8. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa menjadi lebih melakukan arahan dari guru ketika diberikan instruksi dengan bahasa langsung ketimbang tidak langsung. Instruksi langsung yang diberikan dalam bentuk chunk juga membantu siswa mengetahui apa yang mereka lakukan di kelas dan menjadi lebih terarah dalam pembelajaran. Instrumen yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah formulir observasi selama praktikum, RPP (Rancangan Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran), dan jurnal refleksi.
