Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of video game engagement on players' intentions to continue playing, purchase virtual items, and recruit new players, with a case study of Mobile Legends. This research employs a quantitative method using an online questionnaire via Google Forms, distributed to Mobile Legends players in Indonesia who have been actively playing in the past year. A total of 176 respondents met the criteria for analysis. The variables examined include telepresence, challenge, focus attention, role projection, fantasy fulfillment, escapism, arousal, emotional involvement, enjoyment, and social interaction on gaming experience (gamer experience), as well as the relationship between gamer experience and video game engagement on players' intentions to continue playing, purchase virtual items, and recruit new players. Data analysis techniques used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with purposive sampling. The results indicate that enjoyment, arousal, social interaction, escapism, and focus attention have a significant positive effect on gamer experience and video game engagement, while fantasy fulfillment has a lower impact. The implications of this research for game developers highlight the importance of maintaining a balance of challenge elements, updating social and emotional features, and leveraging new platforms to enhance player interactions. This study also suggests developing interactive elements to improve the gaming experience and long-term player engagement. Future research is recommended to explore other variables beyond this model, such as mediation and moderation variables that may influence the relationships among variables. The study concludes that enjoyment, arousal, social interaction, and escapism significantly contribute to the gaming experience, while fantasy fulfillment has a lower impact.
