Abstract

This study aims at the use of English as the language of instruction to increase grade VII students learning outcomes in learning Biology. Based on classroom pre-observation it was identified that grade VII students could not effectively grasp the concepts of Biology because of the language of instruction that they use. In this case, teacher used English as the language of instruction for teaching science. In addition with that, all the resources such as books and handouts also written in English. This situation affects students learning outcomes in Biology. The study took place at SDH Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, July 21 until November 28, 2009/2010 academic year. The design of the study is Action Research that consists of three cycles. Research instruments used for data gathering are through pre-observation, documentation, observation and reflection sheets. The result of this study is the use of English as the language of instruction will increase grade seven students’ learning interest while the teacher using various method of teaching and able to create a comfortable learning environment. The conclusion of this study is as a teacher we should develop our teaching method. Various strategy of teaching method will influence students’ enthusiasm in learning. Teacher also has to create a comfortable learning environment, because it will help students to enjoy the lesson or not. / Berdasarkan hasil pra-observasi yang dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa hasil belajar siswa kelas tujuh tidak dapat memahami konsep-konsep Biologi secara efektif karena bahasa pengantar yang digunakan. Dalam hal ini, guru menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar ketika mereka mengajar sains. Sejalan dengan itu, semua sumber yang digunakan seperti buku-buku dan lembar kerja siswa juga disajikan dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris. vii Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui penggunaan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa kelas tujuh dalam pelajaran Biologi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SDH Daan Mogot, Jakarta Barat, 21 Juli sampai 28 November, 2009/2010 tahun akademik. Metode penelitian yang dilakukan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Instrumen-instrumen yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data adalah observasi, dokumentasi, evaluasi guru mentor, dan lembar observasi Dari hasil penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa penggunaan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam pelajaran Biologi akan meningkatkan minat belajr siswa, selama guru masih menggunakan variasi cara mengajar dan bisa menciptakan suasana belajar yang nyaman. Kesimpulannya, sebagai seorang guru kita harus selalu memperbaharui system mengajar kita. Semakin bervariasi metode mengajar yang kita pergunakan, akan semakin mudah siswa untuk memahami materi yang disampaikan.
