Abstract
People with visual impairments have their own challenges in carrying out activities, especially in performing arts or theater activities that require mobilization on stage. Unfortunately, until now there are still many auditoriums in educational environments that have not paid attention to the safety and comfort aspects for blind people as performers. In fact, participation in performing arts is believed to be able to increase students' self-confidence (Sianipar et al., 2024). This study aims to analyze and optimize the space for movement of blind people in performing arts, with a case study of the auditorium at the Mitra Netra Education Center, Bandung, which was specially designed by the author and team. The research method used is an instrumental case study, which is an in-depth approach to one object to gain a broader scientific understanding. The aspects analyzed include the layout and shape of the space, circulation, orientation and distance between openings, and material patterns and textures. The results of the study show that an auditorium that is friendly to the blind must have a geometrisc shape so that it is easily recognized and memorized by blind people, good circulation has a minimum size of 90cm. In addition, the selection of materials, good contrasting textures can help blind people identify room changes by hearing the sound of tapping between the stick and the material, differences in texture, and changes in color information.
With a space design that considers these aspects, blind people can be safer, more comfortable, and more confident in actively participating in performance activities. This research is expected to be a reference for designing more inclusive auditoriums in the future.
