Abstract
Jewelry Display Rack, Storage Cabinet.
Furniture designed to be accessible for visually impaired individuals is a
response to the lack of facilities that can be accessed by people with visual
impairments. Therefore, the Mitra Netra Education Center in Bandung has been
specifically designed to enhance the independence, comfort, and safety of its users,
with a focus on furniture design that improves security and user comfort during the
identification and navigation process. While the entire building is designed to
support the diverse needs of its users, this research focuses on three primary pieces
of furniture frequently interacted with by both visually impaired and non-visually
impaired users on the first floor: the Pottery Display Rack, Jewelry Display Rack,
and Storage Cabinet. To support the findings of this research, the methodology
employed is a case study approach, where the study focuses on a deep
understanding of a specific phenomenon or case within a particular context.
Detailed and comprehensive data is gathered as a source of information, which can
be obtained through observations, interviews, documents, and research reports or
journal publications related to the topic. The choice of an instrumental case study
aims to explore broader ideas or concepts and provide further generalizations
within a wider context. The goal is to ensure that the designed furniture is
accessible and meets the needs of users, while also providing a non-visual aesthetic
experience for visually impaired users, which is also accessible to non-visually
impaired visitors. As a result, non-visually impaired visitors have the opportunity
to experience the world from both a functional and non-visual aesthetic perspective,
while still maintaining an engaging visual appeal.
