Abstract

Study of phytochemical and bioactive compounds of plants has been going through centuries. Muntingia calabura L. or talok (Indonesia) is one of many plants that has potential to be source of antioxidant. The research was aimed to study the phytochemical constituent and determine total phenolic contents, antioxidant activity and anti-diabetic activity of Muntingia calabura L. with different type of sample, solvents, and extraction method. It was found that the fruit comprised of several phytochemical compounds such as Phytosterols, Phenolics, Flavonoids, Tannin, and Terpenoids, Saponin and Cardiac Glycoside. The highest phenolic value was found in Green fruit skin with ethyl acetate solvent, and MAE (Microwave-Assisted Extraction) method with 248.51 ± 2.95 mg GAE/g extract. Furthermore, the extract had also showed great antioxidant activity and anti-diabetic potential with IC50 value of 22.41 ± 0.05 mg/L and 66.80 ± 4.03 mg/L respectively. GC-MS assay has indicated that phenolic compound such as Gallic acid (3-4-5 trihydroxybenzoicacid) was the most abundant among other chemical compound detected, approximately 41.07% constituents.
